Monster Munchies

This week I actually cooked some of the things I made for lunch. Ani was very happy about that. She insists that a sandwich is not lunch (I’m not quite sure what she thinks a sandwich is… a snack maybe?). A cooked lunch is proper according to her.

Lunch
Mini chocolate pudding pie with fruit imperials on top (these were not packed inside the boxes)
Mozzarella and Colby Jack cheese cubes, pepperoni and summer sausage cubes, toothpicks (the kids had fun creating shapes using the cubes and toothpicks), gorganzola crackers
Carrot sticks
Guacamole (smushed up very ripe avocado mixed with lemon juice, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and a little water to get it the right consistency)

Lunch
Pizzadillas (small flour tortillas folded in half with pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese inside and sprinkled on top and then baked for a few minutes in the oven to get the cheese to melt; I heated them in the microwave for about 30 seconds at lunchtime), Skittles
Goldfish
Peanuts

Lunch
Ham and cheese crescents (deli ham cut into strips combined with grated cheddar and then placed on a opened out crescent roll and topped with another crescent roll with the edges pushed down to kind of seal it and then baked in the oven for a few minutes at 375; I heated these up in the microwave for about 30 seconds at lunchtime as well)
Sugar cookies (I used a mix)
Blueberries

Lunch
Yellow rice, beans, and cheese (rice cooked with chicken bouillon, turmeric, garlic powder, and pepper and mixed with pinto beans and topped with grated cheddar cheese; because the rice would need to be heated I put everything else in cupcake liners so they could easily be removed from the lunchbox while it was in the microwave; I heated it in the microwave about a minute and a half at lunchtime, just long enough to heat the rice and beans and melt the cheese)
Apricot pretzel goldfish (“glue” a dried apricot on a mini pretzel with icing and add a mini chocolate chip eye)
Blueberries

    Those look good!

Justin’s the same way about sandwiches– he thinks they’re snacks, not meals. He doesn’t like it when I serve sandwiches for lunch…. but it happens every day anyway, lol.

Just wondering…. does Adrian get peanuts in his lunch too, or do you substitute something for the nuts for him?

I am loving all of these lunches in those cute little containers on different blogs. Hannah usually helps me to prepare lunches at home during the day while I help the younger girls with their school lessons, but I am seriously thinking that I may need to start preparing meals like this when she heads off to work part time this year.

Hi! I wrote you earlier. We were neighbors with Jeanne here in Orlando. This week I have spent alot of time thinking about how to do lunches more appealing, healthier and fun to eat. I have looked alot of containers, bento boxes, etc. I still can’t quite settle on which one will work the best for my girls. I have another question for you. For the younger kids, like kindergardners, do they have any trouble opening the container you use? Do they need help fron you? (I don’t homeschool, my kids go to the same the Bowies went to). Does the food stay in the container while they are opening it? Thanks again! Cindy

I had actually never had the little boys open their own lunchboxes. I’ve always done it for them or one of my big two have. So I tried it out and had Fritz (age 4) open one. He could open it on the first try. After a little practice he was able to open it keeping the box nicely horizontal so he would be able to open it without spilling his food. Out of curiosity I had Adrian (age 2) try to open one and he was also able to open it on his own.
